Hisham, a 29-year-old former construction worker is the caretaker of the Martyr's Park. He divides his time between burying Martyrs and as a fighter in a Free Syria Army reinforcement Unit. ..In August, a government jet fired a rocket at Hisham's uncle's house. The people on that block are very poor, their homes single-story and made of cinderblock. The rocket destroyed the building and killed three of Hisham's cousins, one of them 13. .Two weeks later, Hisham's younger brother Khalid did not return home after his shift driving a taxi. Hisham searched for Khalid for three days before receiving a call from an acquaintance on the government-controlled side of the city, saying he'd been killed by a sniper. At sundown, Hisham went to an address provided by the acquaintance and found Khalid's taxi stalled in the middle of the street. He belly-crawled to the passenger side, opened the door, put the stick in neutral, attached a piece of rebar to the rear axel, belly-crawled back to a nearby corner, and pulled the car to safety. The driver's side window was shattered; Khalid's bloody head rested on the steering wheel. ?I swore to God that I would pick up the gun and fight this regime,? Hisham, who until then had worked as a construction laborer, explained.
