Afghanistan's security bubble

American and Afghan infantry soldiers prepare to board a Chinook transport helicopter bound for a remote Combat Outpost near the Korengal Valley - the home of many of the insurgent groups currently operating in Afghanistan. In post-NATO Afghanistan, Afghan security forces will not be able to adequately resupply their most remote bases (such as the ones located in the mountainous regions of eastern Afghanistan, an area teeming with insurgent activity), as they lack the air and ground assets that their NATO counterparts have at the ready - this fact will become increasingly vital in these areas that must remain under Afghan Government control (because of the many weapons and insurgent smuggling routes that originate along the Pakistan border). ©Javier Manzano
