KHAK-E-JABAR DISTRICT, AFGHANISTAN - MAY 15. .Eight-year-old Zahedullah heads back to his village after a day of looking for scrap metal and shrapnel from exploded anti-personel mines outside his village in Khak-e-Jabar district. The areas in and around the capital Kabul were heavily mined during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan during the 1980's. Many children such as Zahedullah collect shrapnel in order to sell as scrap metal - it is not uncommon that these children get maimed of killed by land mines they encounter while trying to make a living collecting scrap metal.
